AI Finance Implementation Daily | 2026-09-29

Daily briefing on practical AI applications in finance for 2026-09-29. Highlights two implementable cases with strict human oversight: five-year financial modeling QC against known answers and read-only cash application matching. Notes data gaps in accounting close, tax, and treasury forecasting. Includes OpenAI CFO team-building insights and open-source architecture patterns.

Materials reviewed: modeling QC, Remote cash application, month-end variance draft repository writable; tax new cases still insufficient. Public daily report publishing begins.

This issue only accepts materials that can be decomposed into inputs, machine boundaries, and human sign-off. Portfolio repos, community AMAs, and company finance head self-descriptions are explicitly marked and do not represent production conclusions from your ledger. Appointments, financing announcements, and compute marketing content were not adopted.

Today’s Most Implementable Items (2)

1. Five-Year Model: Validate Against Known Answers First, Then Discuss “One-Sentence Statement Generation”; Unbalanced Statements Must Not Be Submitted

  • Scenario: FP&A / investment & financing modeling. On-site use of a natural language instruction to generate a five-year three-statement model. Claude can produce a complete draft in approximately 15 minutes, but historical figures are hardcoded as static values, debt is crammed into a single long formula, and formulas are inconsistent across peers. Copilot also produced an unbalanced balance sheet, could not locate the error, and suggested “submitting to the boss is acceptable.”
  • Actionable Steps: This week, do not start from a blank complex model. Select a historical case you already know how to prepare with known answers (an assumptions page + revenue/cost/debt schedule). Run the same instruction only once. The human must review item by item: whether cells that should use formulas were written as static values, whether the balance sheet balances, whether scenarios are controlled via assumption page switches or by multiplying results by coefficients, and whether cross-period formulas in the same row are copied consistently.
  • Review Controls: If the balance sheet does not balance, the entire statement is void and must not enter the investment committee / management package. Upon discovering static values or inconsistent cross-period formulas, only modify cells that the human can explain; do not have the model “regenerate another version” to overwrite. The preparer and reviewer must not be the same person. Excel can use row difference checks (e.g., Ctrl+) to catch cross-period formula drift.
  • Deliverables: Model QC checklist (cell type / is formula / balance sheet difference / scenario linkage / human accept or reject) + annotated draft. Unsigned items must not be treated as deliverables.

2. Cash Application: First Match High-Volume Items Where Errors Are Reversible, Do Not Modify the General Ledger from the Start

  • Scenario: Treasury / AR matching large volumes of receipts to invoices. Remote CFO Michiel Boere stated that cash application and report pre-audit are already running in production; errors are recoverable, just as human errors can be corrected. He explicitly stated: do not allow the model to post directly to the general ledger without supervision.
  • Actionable Steps: This week, only perform read-only matching. Inputs = bank / receipt channel posting list + invoice ledger (customer, invoice number, amount, due date). Rules first: invoice number exact match and amount exact match. Remaining items go to exceptions; the model is only permitted to write investigation notes (unbilled, partial payment, fees, misapplied), and must not change the cleared status.
  • Review Controls: Automated suggestions limited to exact key matches only; treasury operator must not also approve. Target for erroneous clearances this week: 0. Without human sign-off, do not clear in the ledger or post.
  • Deliverables: Matched / unmatched table + exception reasons + human accept / reject. No automated clearances on the books.

Accounting / Close / Controls

Data unavailable. No new month-end journal entries, three-way invoice match, or revenue recognition operational cases this period. Item 2 is receipt matching and does not involve opening/closing periods or posting.

FP&A / Planning / Reporting

See Today’s Most Implementable Item 1. AI Modeling: Validate Against Known Answers First

Closed loop: Known case inputs → Model generates draft three statements → Human checks static values / balance / scenario linkage → QC checklist signed → Only then consider as deliverable. Independent board package production cases: Data unavailable.

Treasury / Cash / Risk

See Today’s Most Implementable Item 2. Cash Application Read-Only Matching

Closed loop: Receipt list + Invoice ledger → Key matching → Exception investigation draft → Human sign-off → Only then consider clearance. Independent 13-week cash forecast production cases: Data unavailable.

Tax / Compliance / Audit

Data unavailable. No new AI implementation cases or operational methods for tax research, SOX / internal controls, or audit evidence management within the last 365 days were identified this period. Item 2 can be extended to “report pre-audit only produces exception lists and does not replace external audit”; not opened as a standalone item this period.

CFO / Leader Team Building Experience

First provide all staff with available tools and real tasks, then discuss headcount; people own the results, measured by operating metrics rather than seat count

  • OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar (2026-08-10): After the finance hackathon, nearly everyone uses AI weekly; some who had never written code used Codex to break approved monthly advertising forecasts down to weekly / daily and reconciled with the approved model. IR used custom GPTs with restricted sources to draft investor Q&A, with the IR team reading the draft, supplementing judgment, and verifying consistent tone — model accelerates, human signs.
  • Executable division of labor: IT / governance first defines data scope, executable actions, and when to escalate; forecasts must trace back to source; changes to approved baselines require finance authorization. Ask four questions of each process: Has the required work been completed? What is the full cost (including human review and rework)? Can the result be used? Is it faster or does it enable better decisions? For close, examine cycle time, auto-match rate, number of exceptions, and time to explain variances — do not use number of seats provisioned as the metric.

Variance figures calculated by script, model only writes commentary draft; must not be distributed without approval

  • Reusable architecture: P&L actual vs budget → JavaScript calculates variances and favorable / unfavorable (model not involved) → Only send account totals and Top 10 variances to the model → 4–7 commentary points + analyst checklist → Slack draft, while writing review_status=draft. Model outage still pushes variance table.
  • Suitable for pilot: A 10–12 line closed department P&L, generate draft via bypass, do not overwrite human-written commentary.
  • Note: 0 stars; source page shows created and pushed 2026-05-17; portfolio / synthetic data, not a production close system. Do not send detailed transaction flows or customer names to the model.

Pending Verification Leads

Small Experiments This Week

  1. Five-Year Model QC with Known Answers (Owner: FP&A; Second person signs balance) Per Item 1. Output: model_qc_YYYYMMDD.xlsx. Passing standard: balance sheet difference must be 0; all static-value cells flagged; unbalanced or “close enough” versions must not be distributed.
  2. 20 Receipt Read-Only Matches (Owner: Treasury; AR samples exceptions) Per Item 2. Invoice number + amount exact match only permitted to suggest matched. Output: match table + exceptions. Erroneous clearances must be 0; do not execute clearance in the ledger this week.
  3. Department P&L Commentary Draft (Owner: FP&A; Controller samples 3 figures) Per open source item. After Excel calculates variances, paste only totals and Top 10 into the model. Output: variance table + draft commentary + human edit traces. Draft figures must reconcile to the table; entire section void if unreconciled.
